Role of a Teacher
We will start with a small incident in the Visionary Abdul Kalam’s life. One day as he was addressing a gathering, many questions were asked by the students about his success. When he was questioned about his achievements, he said that he really loved to be a teacher. Then a small child came forward and spoke to him and said that he was unable to talk in English. Abdul kalam encouraged the boy and said that he can talk in Malayalam. This small incident teaches us that Kalam reaffirmed the little child’s confidence. The teacher has an important role to play as an influencer who can guide and teach right things to the child.
There are some important roles that a teacher plays.
1. The authoritative role which the teacher plays involves a major part of teacher involvement but it doesn't mean that there is no scope for growth for students.
2. Teachers have their own method of teaching and work for the benefit of students and also be open for all the questions and doubts which they ask.
3. The students will have freedom to ask questions and also clarify the doubts in an authoritative classroom. If the teacher is authoritative and she doesn't involve in the classroom then it would be not an exemplary classroom.
2. Teacher as a Delegator
Teacher plays the role of a delegator in the class and gives ownership to a few students to take up the responsibilities. The teacher's involvement is the classroom becomes very less, but still the class is in perfect control.
When teacher conducts group activities like in some subjects of Science or Social Studies, the children behave as group leader and they can help in activities like group activities and classroom discussions.
Therefore, the delegatory role of a teacher is one of the important roles of a teacher in the classroom.
3. The teacher as a prompter
A teacher can play the role of a prompter. Sometimes, in the class when a task is given, she enables children to go on with the task. But when due to some confusion and doubts, the student gets stuck, the teacher helps them throughout the process. This way both the teacher and student play a good role in the learning process.
3. Teacher as a participant
If there is an activity in the class like a debate or group discussion, the teacher plays the role of a participant and build interest of the students. It would be encouraging for the students to perform, as the teacher is also participating along with them in the class.
4. Teacher as a demonstrator
The teacher demonstrates the concepts or ideas in in the best effective manner. Here the teacher should go beyond the boundary and limits to make the students understand the topic in the most effective way. As we all know teaching is one-fourth preparation and three fourth theatre.
5. Teacher as a lecturer
The teacher plays the role of a lecturer and tutor. The teacher explains the topics to the classroom with a lot of knowledge. The teacher explains the topic to the children and ensures the students would be highly involved in this method.
6. Teacher as a resource
A teacher has to play the role of a library. She should be updated with latest knowledge. This assures the students that they can turn to their teacher whenever they need help as a student.
When the teacher conducts seminar, when the student gets stuck or confused in a topic, teacher can help with her knowledge be a resource full of knowledge so as to guide the students in the correct path.
7. Teacher as a counsellor
When the students enter into any arguments or differences or any problems, the teacher should act as a counsellor and help the student to understand and help them to take a meaningful decision in that particular situation.
Conclusion
Therefore, it is very important to know that the teacher has to do multiple roles in her profession. The teacher has to not only control over her class but also be a kind hearted person where the students can feel comfortable. The teacher should be a prompter and facilitator who is full of knowledge. She needs to lead the child in a proper direction. The teacher should play the different roles in a class for the benefit for her students.
